Ishan Khosla – The Typecraft Initiative

The Typecraft Initiative is a project where Indian cultures largely related to an art expression get exposure throughout Design. It is a joint venture between Ishan Khosla Design and Typerepublic. It has brought to light the various Indian art forms including Godna, Chittara, and Mithila.

Typecraft is a self-initiated and self-funded project which collaborates with the tribal artists and craftspeople from India. It creates typefaces based on various crafts and tribal arts. The motive behind it is to make people aware of these ancient art forms which then further impels them to dig deep in the history, context, work and life of these artists. They work to raise funds for collaboration and involvement of diverse groups of tribal artists and craftspeople from all over India.

Ishan said in an interview, “Whether we make money or not, the craftsperson always gets paid in advance. Funds raised from the sale of the typefaces is first used to cover all costs and initiate similar new projects with other tribal and craft artists groups.”

The project is meant for craftspeople and tribal artists to think in new ways to earn a livelihood where they can no longer sustain themselves solely through traditional networks.

In this initiative, the graphic designers and their skills are used in creating a typographic archive of the works of the tribal artists in a digitally-driven world.

Typography and type design are about visualizing the culture and making the language visible. The shape of letters not only genuinely express the civilizations but also reinforce the identity and cultural values of the tribal groups.

Till now Ishan Khosla has developed more than seven typefaces ranging from Kutchi embroidery, Mithila paintings from Bihar to Godna and Chittara art form from Karnataka. He hopes to create at least one typeface from each state of India.
