Audemars Piguet has established itself as one of the top three horological brands in the world for quality, complexity and desirability. AP’s global respect is the result of over one hundred years of hard work and dedication. In order to be a benchmark in the world of luxury watches, Audemars Piguet had to differentiate itself from the competition, which means innovating and taking risks; risks that at one point in history were so acute that it had nearly resulted in the downfall of the brand.
In the historic watch making capital of Le Brassus in 1875, two friends, Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet established a workshop to make complicated watch movements. Audemars produced and assembled movements whilst Piguet ensured that the completed movements were correctly regulated. The two friends made the Audemars Piguet brand name successful by being champions of their respective craft and over time, the company and thebrand began to grow, quickly becoming one of the largest watchmaking employers in Switzerland. AP ensured the strictest quality control which ultimately allowed them to produce some stunningly complicated movements. After the demise of Audemars in 1918 and Piguet in 1919, the company continued to live the passion of its founders and established itself as one of the finest names in watchmaking. The smallest minute repeater, the thinnest watch, the first skeleton watch; all these accomplishments enhanced Audemars Piguet's status as being one of the very best. After creating the world’s thinnest watch in 1946 and their first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar in 1957, they invented one of the most iconic watch designs of all time in 1972: the Royal Oak.Named after the tree that legendarily protected King Charles II from the Roundheads (and consequently used as the name of eight separate Royal Navy Warships), the Royal Oak personified AP’s independent character, as it was the first stainless steel high-end watch in an era when luxury pieces were generally produced in gold. In the contemporary era, the collection is immediately distinguishable, and aesthetically branded by its Guilloché dial and octagonal bezel, held with oversize screws.
In 1993, Audemars Piguet presented a new sportier reiteration of the collection, The Royal Oak Offshore. With a lavish 42mm case, it was the world’s first oversized watch. It typically features up to 300m water resistance, anti-magnetic protection and rugged materials like carbon, rubber and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. AP continued to convey their timeless design flair and Haute Horlogorie roots with the Jules Audemars Collection. The elegant collection is distinguishable by beautiful round 18-carat rose gold cases, and complications such as day & date windows and power reserve indicators.Over the decades, AP timepieces have grew and evolved to signify inimitable reinterpretations of traditional complications, instilled with technological inventions, such as the Audemars Piguet escapement. Each AP watch demands a fine art of reliving rare familial talents that Audemars Piguet is determined to keep blooming, by passing them on to younger generations.
